Benefits of Yoga

Well-being in the workplace is currently a hot topic and one which is gathering momentum in the Western World. Obesity and stress, in particular, are major issues.

Employers increasingly see a need to look after their staff, in order to recruit and retain the best, as well as to improve efficiency and productivity.

Yoga is a great option!

More and more employers are including yoga in their offering to employees.

I talk to one of the MTV staffers who tells me, "Life at work is full of distractions. Yoga gives me an opportunity to focus, since it's rare that everything is so serene."

This attitude may explain why yoga is catching on at corporations. Nike, HBO, Forbes, and Apple all offer on-site yoga classes for their employees. These and scores more Fortune 500 companies consider yoga important enough to offer classes as a regular employee benefit.

Group doing yoga

Nowadays, US business schools are using ancient yoga wisdom, such as the epic Bhagavad Gita, on their executive programmes.

I often use this extract from Jack Hawley's translation in Chapter 2, verse 49 "Work performed with anxiety about results is far inferior to work done in a state of calmness"

Yoga is a wonderful system for building strength and flexibility of mind and body together. We combine stretching, breathing, relaxation and meditation exercises during our practice. Regular yoga practice enables us to approach life and its challenges with a quiet mind and a healthy body.

Yoga is not just about skinny people in impossible physical positions! Yoga can fit really well into a work environment, for example

  • Stretching postures for the office, boardroom airport or train.
  • Meditation techniques wherever you can shut your eyes.
  • Breathing exercises you really can do them anywhere!
